Sioux means Lesser Snake in Chippawa. They call themselves Lakota, meaning friend. Traditionally, the Lkota followed and hunted buffalo from place to place, which is why they lived in lightweight tents called Tipis, that could be taken apart quickly. The Lakota people used buffalo to provide everythinh they needed to survive, it was considered a Spirit Being by the Lakota and is central to the traditional religion of the Lakota. The Lakota decorat their clothing with beadwork and designs to honor the spirit world. Today, the Lakota have reservations in North and South Dakota and Montana
